This exceptional antique cast iron mechanical coin bank is the highly sought-after “Indian Shooting Bear” bank, designed by Charles A. Bailey and manufactured by the renowned J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut, circa 1883. Celebrated as one of the great classics of American mechanical bank design, this dramatic scene depicts an Indian hunter aiming his rifle at a rearing bear, with a beautifully engineered spring-driven action.

This example features the rare white bear variant, significantly more difficult to find than the standard dark bear version and especially prized among advanced collectors. To operate the bank, a coin is placed on the Indian’s gun; when the mechanism is activated, the spring and locking system engages, depositing the coin securely into the bank. The mechanical action functions properly, including the spring and lock, showcasing the remarkable ingenuity of 19th-century cast iron toy manufacture.
