This expressive antique Japanese polychrome warrior figure dates to the late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1850–1900) and represents a traditional armored guardian or symbolic warrior (musha) rather than a literal battlefield samurai portrait. Pieces of this type were commonly associated with protective household figures, festival imagery, or Boys’ Day (Tango no Sekku) traditions, embodying strength, vigilance, and good fortune.

Hand-formed and hollowed, the figure displays vernacular folk-art craftsmanship, with a deliberately simplified back, hand-incised armor details, and richly layered mineral pigments. The surface shows honest, age-appropriate wear, with natural pigment loss and patina consistent with long-term handling rather than artificial aging. Gilt accents and polychrome decoration retain strong visual presence despite expected losses.

The warrior is shown seated in full armor with a stern, composed expression. The green element at the left side represents a scabbard (saya), and the figure likely originally held a removable sword, now missing — a common and expected loss for figures of this age and type.

This is an authentic example of Japanese folk sculpture from the transitional Edo–Meiji era, offering strong decorative impact and cultural presence for collectors of Asian art, folk art, or historic interiors.
