This evocative antique Japanese polychrome standing figure dates to the late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1850–1900) and represents a Buddhist bodhisattva or attendant deity, rendered in a traditional vernacular folk-art style. Figures of this type were commonly produced for temple, shrine, or domestic devotional use, emphasizing serenity, compassion, and spiritual presence rather than academic precision.

Carved by hand and finished with layered mineral pigments, the figure features a calm, downcast expression, flowing robes, and elongated drapery elements that frame the body. The figure holds a small blue object, likely symbolic (possibly a jewel or offering), and stands upon a stylized rocky base. The simplified rear carving and strong frontal emphasis are consistent with regional workshop production rather than later decorative export pieces.
