This rare piece features the embossed lettering: “Self Closing for Matches & C, Patented Dec 20, 1864, D.M. & Co.” on its hinged lid. Designed to safely store matches, the spring-loaded cover automatically closes to protect contents from sparks—a practical innovation during the Victorian era.

This particular match box was purchased at Portobello Road Market in London, one of the world’s most famous destinations for antiques and collectibles.
