This classic cast iron Novelty Bank mechanical coin bank is a faithful reproduction of the original J. & E. Stevens design, first patented in 1873 and designed by Charles C. Carroll. One of the earliest and most charming mechanical bank concepts, this house-form bank combines architectural detail with an engaging mechanical surprise.

The bank operates by opening the front door, which causes a small interior figure holding a tray to swing outward. A coin is placed on the tray, and when the door is closed, the coin is deposited neatly into the internal storage area. The mechanism functions smoothly, offering both entertainment and historical appeal.

Constructed of solid cast iron with hand-painted details, the bank features a colorful house façade, windows, chimneys, and a working front door. Measuring approximately 5 inches square by 6.5 inches tall, it has excellent shelf presence while remaining compact and display-friendly. This example is clearly a reproduction, ideal for collectors who want the classic design without the cost of an original antique.
