An evocative survivor of 18th-century Scottish horology, this distinguished longcase clock by Samuel Brown of Edinburgh embodies the refined craftsmanship and restrained elegance for which early Georgian clockmaking is admired. With its stately mahogany case, engraved brass dial, and documented maker, this piece offers both historical presence and timeless decorative appeal.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The case is crafted from solid mahogany, displaying classic Georgian proportions with a molded cornice, fluted corner columns, and a tall paneled trunk door showcasing rich grain and warm, naturally aged patina. The original engraved brass dial features Roman numerals, finely worked spandrels, ornate steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial, signed “Sam. Brown, Edinburgh.” The clock retains its original weights and pendulum, a notable and desirable survival for an 18th-century longcase.

Condition

  • Original weights and pendulum are present and hang properly

  • The clock face exhibits a visible crack to the brass dial (see images)

  • The component to which the pendulum hooks appears broken, and the clock is currently not in running condition

  • Evidence of historic repairs to upper pillar details

  • Minor chips to crown molding consistent with age

  • Structurally sound with an attractive, authentic surface throughout

Dimensions

  • Width: 17"

  • Depth: 10"

  • Height: 74"

Design Appeal

Ideal for collectors of early horology, Georgian antiques, or architectural interiors, this longcase clock serves as a commanding focal point in libraries, studies, entry halls, or heritage-inspired spaces. Its untouched character, documented maker, and original components make it equally compelling as a decorative statement or a candidate for sensitive conservation.
