This vintage etching by noted American artist Don Swann depicts the historic “Old South Building” on the University of North Carolina campus. Rendered with Swann’s signature precision and warm tonal detail, the image captures the timeless Georgian architecture framed by mature trees.

Swann, who lived in Baltimore and studied in Munich, Germany, and Italy, is well known for his etchings of historic American architecture and naval subjects. His works were exhibited at the Smithsonian, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Library of Congress, among others. Each etching was hand-pulled from Swann’s original copper plates, and this example is part of a limited edition of 300 prints.

Condition

The etching itself appears clean and well-preserved under glass. The frame shows mild age wear, and the paper backing has considerable surface deterioration and flaking, typical for its age. The original information labels about the artist and edition remain affixed to the reverse.
